How do you market yourself?
How do you market your web site?
How do you sell your skills?
How do you seek new business?
How do you develop long-term relationships?
These questions and more are all par for the course in the Marketing segment of the Web Master program.
We will take a look at how to get your foot in the door at larger interactive agencies, and we will also address the freelance approach - how to set sail and keep the boat afloat. This includes contracts, invoicing and any other formalities of doing business in the Digital Media industry.
For web projects, we will discuss the benefits of the world of social networking and Search Engine Optimization - both significant tools in seeing that your developments are seen by the people who are looking for them, as well as ensuring that your developments are getting as much traffic as they can.
The success of failure of a project is very dependent on management abilities. Throughout the program, examples of good management practices will be demonstrated and put to use. Within the context of a real life web project, students can develop a clear understanding of the importance of proper management.
It’s not the intricacies of development that get noticed by the end-user, but rather the effectiveness of the design that makes the first impact.
Web and Interface design plays a significant role in the success of any development. Even a strong development will not be met with wide acceptance or enthusiasm if the front-end is not up to par.
In this segment of the course, we will investigate the factors involved in effective web and interface design as well as the tools used to implement these designs into a web development.
JavaScript is a client-side scripting language. In web developments, this means that it is script which is interpreted and processed by the web browser.
JavaScript is known to be used to manipulate HTML objects and add interactivity or control the use of information on a web site.
Some such examples of this would be when an interface is developed that responds to the movement or clicks of the mouse, or when a window pops up to inform you that you have not filled out a form correctly.
The Content Management System that will be covered throughout the Web Master program is WordPress, which is written in PHP.
PHP is a server-side scripting language, meaning it is code which is run directly on a web server. After this code is processed, it outputs HTML to be viewed by web browsers.
Through working with WordPress, participants of the Web Master program will have an opportunity to be introduced to PHP and develop some familiarity with its syntax and how it works with databases to create dynamic web pages.
When you speak of show-stopping websites - the kind that people tell all their friends to check out - it is likely that Adobe Flash played a major role in the development.
Games, animation, streaming media players, and rich, interactive experiences - the prevalence of Flash is unmistakeable.
During the 16-week Web Master program, there will be four full sessions dedicated to Adobe Flash and getting up and running with ActionScript 3, the scripting language for the Flash Player.
Although Flash can stand on it’s own, the focus of this section of the program will be incorporating Flash into a web development - particularly, into a WordPress content management system.
HTML is the foundation of web development.
CSS is the landscaping and paint job that makes the foundation look good.
The web master program will take a good long look at developing skills in both HTML and CSS as necessary pillars of a successful web development.
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a mark-up language that is interpreted by web browsers to determine the structure of content that is to be displayed online.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are sets of instructions that tell the browser how to present or style the material that has been written in HTML.
HTML is all about content.
CSS is all about design.
A successful project requires both.

Second, although we have taken a lot of time and attention toward developing a curriculum, the inaugural series of workshops and classes are a way of helping us here at the YMC refine our tact and further develop our curriculum. Without a firm foundation, even the best ideas will never bloom.
This segment of the program will focus on one of the three core languages of web development: HTML.
HTML is the primary mark-up language used for content in web developments.
Session 4 will serve as an introduction to rock-solid HTML techniques. The approach we will take will be one that accounts for both usability, as well as a point of departure for successful CSS and JavaScript implementation.
